FAQs

If you’re considering physiotherapy, it’s natural to have a few questions. Below are answers to some of the most common queries about appointments and treatment at Box End Physio. If you need anything else, feel free to get in touch.

  • Your first appointment is a one-to-one session designed to understand your concerns and what you hope to achieve from treatment. We’ll talk with you about your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and how your condition affects your daily activities.

This is followed by a physical examination, which may include assessing your posture, joint mobility, and muscle strength. Where appropriate, we may guide you through gentle movements that reproduce your symptoms.

This helps us identify the factors contributing to your pain or movement difficulties. You are encouraged to ask questions at any stage. After the assessment, we’ll explain our findings and agree a personalised treatment plan. This may include hands-on treatment, targeted exercises, and practical advice to support your goals.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. You may need to adjust or remove layers for certain assessments - for example, you might take off a T-shirt to assess your shoulder, or wear shorts so we can assess your knee.

If you prefer not to remove layers, that’s completely fine. We will always adapt the assessment so you feel comfortable and at ease throughout your session.

  • Yes, it can be normal to feel a little sore or tender after manual treatment, such as joint mobilisations or soft tissue massage. Sometimes the area may feel slightly bruised or stiff, but this is usually different from your original pain and typically settles within a day or so.

A little soreness can be a normal part of the treatment process and can indicate the therapy is effective. Within reason, this is expected but if you experience strong or persistent pain, please let us know. We can advise you or simply adjust your treatment next time if necessary.

  • No referral is needed - you can book directly with us. We’ll assess your condition and create a personalised treatment plan to suit your goals.

If your condition requires further investigation or input from another healthcare professional, we can guide you to the right specialist. We can also communicate and liaise with your GP, providing updates, letters, or reports if needed. This may incur an additional charge.

  • The number of physiotherapy sessions varies from person to person. It depends on factors such as the severity of your condition, how your body responds to treatment, and the nature of the problem.

We don’t prescribe a set number of sessions in advance. Instead, your physiotherapist will review your progress at each session and adjust your treatment plan as needed. Sometimes recovery comes from advising you on exercises and self-management, rather than hands-on treatment every week. Our focus is on helping you recover properly, at the right pace, and giving you the tools to manage your condition independently.

  • If you need to cancel or reschedule, please let us know as soon as possible. We ask for at least 24 hours’ notice so we can offer the slot to someone else. Cancellations made within 24 hours or missed appointments may incur a fee, but we will always try to be accommodating wherever possible.

  • When you attend your first appointment, or shortly after booking, you’ll complete a brief registration form collecting essential details such as contact information, GP, emergency contact, and relevant medical history. During your assessment and follow-up appointments, the physiotherapist will also record clinical notes relating to your treatment.

All personal and medical information is stored securely, either in locked filing cabinets for paper records or within a secure, encrypted cloud-based system for electronic records, in accordance with data protection legislation. By consenting to treatment, you are also consenting to us storing this information in a secure and confidential way.

  • NHS physiotherapy is increasingly delivered “virtual-first,” meaning many appointments are online or over the phone, with limited time for hands-on assessment.

In private practice, you’ll have a face-to-face session with the same physiotherapist each time. Appointments are longer, allowing thorough assessment, hands-on treatment and personalised exercise and advice tailored to your goals, lifestyle and body.

  • Many private health insurance policies cover physiotherapy. Before booking, check your policy for details on coverage, limits, and whether you need pre-authorisation. As we are a new clinic, we are gradually building relationships with insurance companies. If you have insurance and would like to use it, please get in touch with us to discuss your policy and options. The physiotherapist can also provide a detailed receipt for you to submit to your insurer.
